Nokia 5800 XM Launched !

Nokia, launched their mid-class iPhone killer, today, at the Nokia Remix event held in London.

Nokia 5800 will be ranged in the XpressMusic category, and will be Nokia first touchscreen smartphone since a few years. They’ve launched one a few years ago, but it failed to reach everyone.

After a few months of working, they got it right, the 5800. Besides multitouch, the 5800 has the advantage on the iPhone all the way. Some features are;

* 3,2 MP Carl Zeiss + Dual Flash + VGA recording 30fps + front video conferencing camera
* MicroSDHC card slot (8GB microSDHC card included) [up to 32GB]
* nHD / 3,2 inch 16million color screen / [640x360]
* High performance GPS with Turn2Turn navigation
* Symbian OS 9.5 5th edition [Tacco]
* Input via fingers, stylus or plectrum
* 3G HSPDA

You see, all these functions beat the iPhone, but then we might think, what the hell, this thing would cost. Guess again, it’s mid-class ranged, which means it’ll have the affordable price tag of €279, before taxes.

The XM 5800 WITHOUT ‘comes with music’ is set to be launched between 8 – 21 October in the UK. Other European countries will follow in November-December.

The XM 5800 WITH ‘Comes with music’ is set to be launched early next year.

Nokia ready to overpower once more

Not so long ago the first 8-mega-pixel camera phones were announced by Sony-Ericsson (c905) and Samsung (innov8 i850).

Although the Innov8 by samsung is the only camera-phone up-to-date that can overpower the N82 and N95 5-mega-pixel quality. The SE C905 handset, doesn’t even come close, which is a waste of a higher mega-pixel count.

From my sources and various other websites, I’ve heard that Nokia is making a device that is so powerful and fully equipped that it will overpower the Innov8 on every asset. It could possible turn out to be the triple-slide design, which Nokia filled a patent for a few months ago.

Some specs that the phone will most likely feature;

- 8 Mega-pixel Auto-Focus, Carl Zeiss Lens,
- LED flash for capturing videos and Xenon Flash
- 2,6 inch – 3,2 inch screen with QVGA, VGA or WVGA resolution
- S60 3.2 FP2 or S60 5th edition (touch)

Sony most innovative brand?

Via a poll taken by 500 British people ranging from 18 – 35 years-old, about which brand was the most innovative, Sony ended up at the 1st spot. That place is well earned and is also resembling the truth and reality. If you see what Sony developedor helped with developingin the past years, you’ll find a never ending list of toys, those include; the PS-series, Aibo, Blu-Ray, DVD, CD, and many more.

When you look at the list, you can see something strange, Apple & Microsoft as 2nd and 3rd. I don’t know why they would rank them that high? Apple doesn’t invent that much, they had the iPhone/leopard/macbook air, and that’s it for the past years. Microsoft on the other hand only had vista and the newcomer windows 7.

Nokia at 5th and behind Virgin? Nokia has innovated a lot more than the whole top 5, besides Sony, which is quite understandable, because they are represented in almost any segment of technology.

The list is clearly weird, but we know, British people are very stupid when it comes to innovation and technology. Check out the full list.

1. Sony
2. Apple
3. Microsoft
4. Virgin
5. Nokia
6. Dyson
7. Nintendo
8. Tesco
9. Sky
10. Panasonic
11. Honda
12. Samsung
13. Google
14. Phillips
15. Dell
16. Toyota
17. eBay
18. Amazon
19. BT
20. Toshiba

Touching is the key to the future !

When you hear the words “touchscreen” and “mobile phone” in the same sentence, you directly think it will be very expensive. Well at least if you want a feature packed one, you’ll have to pay around € 500 for a decent one, or even a lot more than that (think of the iPhone for example).

Every manufracturer in the world, if it’s a mobile phone manufracturer or a television or music-player -manufracturer, notices theirs a change in how we want to interact with all daily use objects.

Nowadays we have the urge to do “input” using the little tops of our fingers, and if possible we want to do it with more fingers at the same time. That’s where apple made good use out of it, by making the iPhone which supports “multiple touch input“.

Nokia noticed it too, and is working on a lot of touchscreen phones and even multi-touch screens (On the left is a computer remade of the Nokia XpressMedia Tube 5800). However they didn’t understand the need of 2 or more fingers at the same time, so they just made simple gestures with one figure that does the same when using 2 or more fingers.

Anssi Vanjoki the VP of Nokia Markets, stated on the 12th of June 2008;

We will introduce products from the very low segment to the highest one featuring this type of functionality.”

Yet again, Nokia looks further than their concurrent. Everyone loves touch-phones, so why not make cheaper ones, so everyone can enjoy them too? I know many people will appreciate it.

Although it’s mostly thinking about getting some cash in the caise, Nokia does think of everyone, and not only of the richer or more fortunate people.

Nokia Sportstracker Beta

Nokia sportstracker, it’s a mobile and website based application, which I’m sure of, not a lot of people use. I thought it wasn’t so good until I started using it.

With this application that uses GPS to track your sporting performance, you can see how fast u went, the distance you’ve covered and many more useful statistics. (Click the image or here)

This application adds a lot of more fun to your weekly or daily sporting routine. You can take pictures and videos on the go, and they will be automatically tagged according to the GPS coordinates and will be shown on the right spot of the workout.

When you’ve downloaded the application to your Nokia phone (here), then register your nokia sportstracker account (here).

Once you’ve done that, you can choose out of the following sports (the last two are those you can customize to your own preference);

  • Walking
  • Cycling
  • Running
  • Skiing
  • Other 1
  • Other 2

What else is cool, is the ability to track your position real time, this means, you’re data will be updated every second to the Nokia Sportstracker Server, where everyone can follow your performance at home. The updating of your position will be done via GPRS/EDGE/3G/HSPDA or WIFI, depending on which service is covering you.

I would give this application a 7 on 10. It could be very cool if Nokia would consider my demands;

  • 3D Tracking
  • Hoovering over the recorded track, showing the stats
  • Break down legenda in color (Fast-Middle-Normal-Slow)
  • Replay of the track according to the real time speed on the website

You have a Nokia phone with integrated GPS antenna or a bluetooth GPS receiver. I would say, get this app and give it a try.
